Born in Serbia into an emigre Russian family. Both maternal and paternal sides of the family come from the Russian nobility and after service in the White Army, were evacuated to Gallipoli, Lemnos and finally Serbia.
Fr Michael was educated at the University High School and trained as a primary school teacher at the Burwood Teachers’ College (now Victoria University). In 1980, graduated Bachelor of Education and Graduate Diploma of Educational Administration (State College of Victoria). The following year, 1981, graduated Bachelor of Theology (MCD). In 2002, completed his Master of Philosophy and in 2005 awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in History.
Fr Michael is the author of a number of books in English and Russian documenting the history of the Russian Orthodox Church and the community in Australia. He has also presented papers at international conferences in Russia, the United States, Korea and the United Kingdom.
In 1991, completed the Bail Justice Accreditation Course at the Leo Cussen Law Institute and appointed a Bail Justice for Victoria. Currently, also a Fellow of the Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices.
Fr Michael is the recipient of a number of distinguished honours including the Order of Australia, the Order of Friendship from the Russian Government and the Orders of St Vladimir and St Anne from the Russian Imperial Family.
Currently Fr Michael is a Patron of the Monarchist League and Patron of the Australia Day Council of Victoria.
Fr Michael has three children and four grandchildren.
